Fifty of anything is a lot. Back in the early days of writing this blog, I wrote someting to the effect that fifty dollars was a lot of money to spend filling up a car. And it still is, but I’ve since come to accept it as a way of life in the modern world. The Romans used L to represent fifty, recognizing that it’s not ten, and it’s not a hundred either, but it is a significantly large quantity of something.
A dozen of anything is also a substantial number. 12 eggs would feed my family and several guests at breakfast, but on an everyday basis twelve would be too many to make. And dozen donuts is enough to buy when you have many people to think about, but it’s not an everyday amount, either.
So combining a large number like fifty, with a substantial quantity like a dozen, results in a whole lot of something. And, since this is my 600th post in this space, I’ve now put fifty dozen little bits of wisdom, or remembrances, or whatever it is that I write here out onto the web. For better or for worse, there they are. Think of then as my contribution to the brave new world of the 21st century.
I’m not through, by any means, but I wanted to stop and reflect on this milestone for a moment. Can I go on for another fifty dozen posts? I’m sure that I can, if the cosmic fates will allow me that much more time on this earth. Based on the first 600, it should take somewhere between a year and eighteen months to accomplish this. Let’s see how it goes.
