In my mind, this picture sums up a lot of what’s wrong with this country. Our manufacturing base has declined to the point where we don’t even make American flags in this country. In our seemingly fanatical zeal to save a few pennies, we’ve taken the very symbol of this nation and sent it off to China.
How many thousands of these things are turned out every single day? I don’t even want to know, but the real answer is that they shouldn’t be made there to begin with. It cheapens us, in both a literal and a figurative sense. And it’s only done because people apparently have no problem with buying them in the first place.
For once, I’m going to let the image do most of the talking. I hope that one day the thought of this cheap, plastic little Chinese-made American flag makes people wonder what we in the early 21st century were thinking. I’m actually wondering that myself.
